The term structured cabling is used to designate a system of cabling and all associated hardware to provide telecommunication services within a commercial building. This includes telephone as well as internet services, or voice and data systems, and is regulated by accepted and approved standards based on the specific building application.
Working with an experienced network cable contractor is critical to ensure the correct wiring or cable choices, as well as the correct standards, are in place for the given building type. For example, Utah structured cabling standards for data centers are different to apartment buildings, and knowing which standards apply based on the use of the commercial building is central to completing the correct cabling design and installation.
Cabling Standards in the United States
Unlike some standards which are local or federal, commercial network cabling standards are international. They have been developed by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) in the United States and a listed under the ANSI/TIA-568 standards. They also correspond with internationally recognized standards used throughout the world.
These standards for structured cabling are further broken down into six subsections. These include specific cabling design and installation requirements for customer premises, commercial building telecommunications infrastructure, cabling and component standards, optical fiber standards, and telecom pathways and spaces as well as administration standards for infrastructure.
International Cabling Standards
In Europe, the ANSI/TIA-586 standards are incorporated in ISO, IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, or CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) standards.
