Most Outstanding Religious Project

LDS Missionary Training Center Expansion

It’s hard to quantify the ambitious nature of this iconic project, which was completed in just less than two years and includes two six-story buildings and 360,000 SF of space, designed to enhance the training experience for new LDS missionaries (up to 3,700 at one time).
The structural system is a side plate moment frame design that allows for large glass areas throughout the project, providing large amounts of natural light to enter the building. Interior walls were constructed with large glass side lights and transom windows to allow light to transfer to center interior spaces. Brick, precast concrete panels, and aluminum window systems complement existing campus buildings while providing more transparency and dynamic mountain views. Each building has a separate color scheme for enhanced way finding that wraps around the elevator core and runs down the corridor wall.
Coordinating the completion of the exterior envelope with the beginning of interior finishes was a huge challenge, as the skin had to be sequenced vertically to the roof and then around the building, while finishes were installed horizontally, floor by floor.
